T188, 2026-08-31, from Jesse's own screenshot of
   /scan-hersteltest/ on a 375px iPhone: the H1 compound "ontstekingswaarden"
   ran off the screen and was cut mid-word.

   The cause, measured rather than guessed, and it is NOT the rule above. The
   GRID TRACK was the right size all along: at 375 the hero grid measured 335,
   exactly the section's content box. What overflowed was the grid ITEM. A grid
   item's default `min-width: auto` gives it an automatic minimum size equal to
   its min-content width, and the min-content of the hero's head column is the
   widest unbreakable word in the H1: `ontstekingswaarden` needs 365px at 34px
   Poppins Bold. So the item laid out 359 wide inside a 335 track and hung 24px
   out of it, and by 375 the last of that had crossed the screen, where the body
   clipped it.

   `overflow-wrap: break-word`, declared on that H1 one line above, cannot help
   and this is the whole trap: by spec it introduces a soft-wrap opportunity for
   LINE LAYOUT only, never for INTRINSIC sizing. So it never reduced the item's
   automatic minimum, and inside the oversized item the word then fitted on a
   line and had no reason to break.

   Measured on the unfixed build at 320 and 375, one rule injected at a time:
   `min-width: 0`, `hyphens: auto` and `minmax(0, 1fr)` each take the head column
   back to the track width on their own. Every DESKTOP grid in this sheet already
   carries `minmax(0, ...)`; the mobile collapse rules had dropped it, which is
   the reason the fault only ever showed on a phone.

   Two rules therefore, and they do different jobs:

   1. `min-width: 0` on the block containers that are grid or flex items, so an
      item can never hand a track a minimum bigger than the space there is. This
      is the guard that makes the class of fault impossible rather than fixing
      one instance of it. Named containers only, never every div: `min-width: 0`
      on a flex chip would let it collapse.
   2. `hyphens: auto` on headings, so that when a Dutch compound still has to
      break it breaks at a legal syllable with a hyphen instead of snapping
      mid-morpheme. The article is inside `
`, which is what
      the hyphenation dictionary keys off; this is the same remedy the four
      column band label already uses further down. */
.bp-scan .bp-scan-hero2 > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-hero-head,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-split > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-cols > *,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-instgrid > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-scale > *,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-verify > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-author > *,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-links > * { min-width: 0; }
.bp-scan h1, .bp-scan h2, .bp-scan h3 { -webkit-hyphens: auto; hyphens: auto; }

/* WordPress core's flow-layout stylesheet gives every child after the first a
   24px block-start margin. Inside a normal column that is spacing; inside a grid
   or a flex row it is a misalignment. Measured on the live page 2026-08-21:
   band cards two and three sat 24px lower than card one AND lost 24px of their
   stretched height, so the row read as broken. Zeroing it on the row containers
   is the fix; core's rule is written with :where() so it carries no specificity
   and a plain class selector wins. */
.bp-scan .bp-scan-scale > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-links > *,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-facts > *, .bp-scan .bp-scan-verify > *,
.bp-scan .bp-scan-instgrid > * { margin-block: 0; }

/* the page opens on brand colour, never on grey */
.bp-scan .bp-scan-rule {
  height: 6px; border: 0; margin-block: 0; max-width: none;
  background: linear-gradient(90deg, #005859 0%, #006B62 38%, #228A62 66%, #B7CB33 100%);
}

/* --- section surfaces. You get your hours in, mostly. And still the alarm is a blow every morning: you struggle to get going, the first coffee does little, and halfway through the afternoon you are nodding off over your screen. You are not ill. You simply do not wake up rested.

The awkward thing about sleep is that you are not there for it yourself. How you feel during the day you know exactly; what happened during the night you have to reconstruct. And that is precisely where your memory lets you down: a bad night you remember, ten ordinary nights you forget, and how long you really lay awake is something no one knows who has to guess at it. So it stays a feeling about a night, and a feeling about a night is not a measurement.

Sleep researchers solved that by asking about a pattern instead of about one night: how long you take to fall asleep, how often you wake up, how rested you get up, how satisfied you are, and what it costs you during the day. Five questions about two weeks, added up into a score from 0 to 100. Not a diagnosis. But a number. And a number is something you can follow.

Questions 1 and 2 of 5. People with sleep complaints systematically overestimate how long they lie awake and underestimate how much they actually sleep, compared with objective measurements. That tendency is almost general, although it is not universal.4

That is why no serious sleep instrument asks about one night. In 1989 Buysse and colleagues built the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index around one month and seven components, from time taken to fall asleep to daytime functioning, and showed that structured self-reporting of this kind tells good sleepers from poor ones.5 The questions in this scan follow the same thought: a pattern over two weeks, split into the components that matter.

Why these five questions

Morin’s Insomnia Severity Index counts seven questions about the past two weeks. In 2011 Morin and colleagues tested it in 959 people from the general population and 183 people in treatment: internal consistency was 0.90 and 0.91, and the score told insomnia from healthy sleep with a published cut-off value.6 In 2001 Bastien and colleagues had already shown that the scale moves with sleep diaries and with sleep studies, and that it picks up change after treatment.7

Gagnon and colleagues repeated that in 2013 with 410 patients in general practice, with an internal consistency of 0.92.8 And because you fill in this scan online: in 2011 Thorndike and colleagues compared the online version with paper and found an agreement of 0.98 or higher.9

Our five questions follow the construct and the look-back period of that scale, in our own words. They are not a copy of it, and the card above says so in as many words.

What a low score means, and above all what it does not mean

The European guideline for insomnia, updated in 2023 by Riemann and colleagues, puts questionnaires and sleep diaries at the front of the examination by a doctor, alongside the conversation itself. A sleep study in the laboratory is there to pick up other sleep problems when there is reason for it, such as pauses in your breathing during sleep.10 In 2013 Buysse described the same order in JAMA: what a doctor establishes follows from the history and a sleep diary, and insomnia affects an estimated 10 to 20 percent of people, in about half of them long term.11

So a questionnaire is a good first sieve, and a first sieve is something other than a result.
