In this article you will read why your energy sinks in the early afternoon, how long that afternoon dip lasts, what light and a short sleep do to it, and what an energy scan can tell you. That matters, because lunch is usually named as the cause, while the measurements show the same pattern with or without food. The BioProfile energy scan measures how much these complaints affect you and shows where you stand today, as the first of the 11 health areas that the full scan assesses. This is not a diagnosis. It is insight, to help you make better choices in your food and your daily life. Pointing to a cause is work for a doctor.
In short
- The afternoon dip runs on the clock: in 12 healthy adults the sleep onset times were shortest in the early afternoon, with a second peak in sleep propensity at about 14:00, independent of food intake.1
- Blue enriched bright light after lunch brought 17 students to a subjective sleepiness of 3.47 (SD 0.49) against 5.47 (SD 0.63) under normal light.2
- Across 11 studies with 381 people in good health, a short sleep gave an effect size for alertness of 0.29 (95% CI 0.10 to 0.48).3
- An energy scan measures how much fatigue you are carrying and gives you a starting value. It is not a diagnosis.

Why it is the afternoon, and not just your lunch
In a laboratory study, 12 healthy adults were given the chance to sleep every 2 hours from 08:00 to 24:00. Sleep onset times on the multiple sleep latency test were shortest in the early afternoon, with a second peak in sleep tendency at around 14:00. Sleep onset REM episodes fell from 83 percent at 08:00 to 0 percent between 20:00 and 22:00, which makes the mid afternoon dip a circasemidian phenomenon, independent of food intake.1
What that means for you: sleep pressure builds twice every 24 hours, once at night and once in the early afternoon, whether you have eaten or not.
Why it hits harder after lunch
Your meal still shapes how the afternoon feels. About 1 to 2 hours after eating, your blood glucose is back at normal values, through insulin from the pancreas.4 What glucose does to thinking is less settled than the lunch story suggests: in a systematic review of 11 neuroimaging studies, 5 of the 11 reported significant behavioural cognitive changes after glucose intake in healthy participants, while 10 of the 11 reported modulation of neurophysiological or neuroimaging markers.5
So the brain clearly responds to glucose, while a measurable change in performance showed up in about half of those studies. Lunch may colour how your dip feels. The clock sets the timing.
How long an afternoon dip lasts
A dip is a stretch of time rather than a stopwatch. The measured peak in sleep propensity lies at about 14:00 and sleep pressure drops towards the evening, with sleep onset REM episodes down to 0 per cent between 20:00 and 22:00.1 Your blood glucose is back to normal values about 1 to 2 hours after a meal.4
So the time window belongs to an afternoon. Tiredness that runs on from waking up to bedtime is something else, and the section on the GP below is for that.
What helps in the hour itself
Light is the best measured of the quick options. In 17 students, 11 of them female, average age 20.47 years, subjective sleepiness after a post-lunch condition in which they were kept from napping was 3.47 (SD 0.49) under blue-enriched bright light of 1000 lx at 6500 K, against 5.47 (SD 0.63) under normal light, and working memory accuracy on the Paced Visual Serial Addition Test was 0.78 against 0.63 (SD 0.03 in both).2
A small group and a bright lamp, so read it as a direction: light early in the afternoon made people less sleepy and more accurate. The study used a lamp; a walk outside or a spot by the window is an untested tip for every day.
A short sleep is the other measured option. A meta-analysis of 11 studies with 381 healthy working-age adults and students found an effect size for alertness of 0.29 (95% CI 0.10 to 0.48), and an effect size of 0.28 (95% CI 0.10 to 0.46) for overall cognitive performance with naps taken before 1 pm.3
Modest effects in people in good health: a short sleep in the early afternoon makes you slightly more alert than sitting the hour out.
What makes the dip smaller from day to day
You cannot prevent an afternoon dip, because the rhythm carries on without food, so the useful question is how deep your dip needs to be. Sleep problems are common: in 2024, more than 1 in 4 Dutch people aged 12 and over reported sleep problems, 31 per cent of women against 21 per cent of men.6
That survey counts sleep problems; it does not measure how deep an afternoon dip gets. Your nights, the light at your workplace and when you take a nap are things you can change yourself.
What an energy scan measures, and where a doctor takes over
The energy scan asks five questions about the past two weeks: your energy through the day, energy dips, how much you lean on caffeine, getting physically tired, and being too worn out to do things. The answers become an energy score from 0 to 100, with the reading band the score falls into. Repeat the scan two weeks later and you have two numbers instead of a memory.
A questionnaire cannot point to the cause of tiredness. Short nights, a low mood, a slow thyroid, low iron and swinging blood glucose all read the same way in a list of questions. So the score is self-insight and a starting value. It is not a diagnosis.
Thuisarts advises calling the GP if tiredness lasts longer than a month, or if there are extra complaints alongside it such as sweating at night, thirst with passing a lot of urine, shortness of breath on light exertion, palpitations, or a lasting low mood.7 Tiredness that lasts longer than 6 months, with clearly reduced daily functioning and no other cause found, is the point at which chronic fatigue as a syndrome becomes a question for a doctor.7
In summary
The afternoon dip comes first and foremost from a biological clock that raises sleep pressure in the middle of the day, with or without a meal.1 Lunch may colour how it feels, while the effect of glucose on performance varies from study to study.5,4 Light and a short sleep early in the afternoon shifted sleepiness and accuracy in measured groups,2,3 and sleep problems are common in the Netherlands.6 An energy score tells you how much fatigue you are carrying. It is not a diagnosis, and tiredness that lasts longer than a month is one for your GP.7

Frequently asked questions
What helps against an afternoon dip?
Blue enriched bright light of 1000 lx at 6500 K, which brought students to a subjective sleepiness of 3.47 against 5.47 under normal light,2 and a short sleep, with an effect size for alertness of 0.29 (95% CI 0.10 to 0.48).3
How long does an afternoon dip last?
The measured peak in sleep propensity lies at about 14:00 and sleep pressure drops towards the evening, with sleep onset REM episodes at 0 per cent between 20:00 and 22:00.1 Your blood glucose is back to normal values about 1 to 2 hours after a meal.4
Why do I sink after lunch?
Partly the clock, which drops away with or without food.1 Partly the meal: 5 of the 11 neuroimaging studies reported a significant behavioural cognitive change after glucose intake in healthy participants.5
Can you avoid an afternoon dip altogether?
You cannot switch off a rhythm that carries on without food, so focus on how deep it goes. Sleep problems are common: more than 1 in 4 Dutch people aged 12 and over reported sleep problems in 2024.6 Tiredness that lasts longer than a month is one for your GP.7
